We talk about companionships in life, and they certainly are very sweet. There is immeasurable helpfulness in strong, true friendships. Still, it is true that however many, faithful, and sympathetic our friends may be, we must enter and pass through all life’s crises alone. Every one of us lives really a solitary life. We do not fight in companies and battalions and regiments, but as individuals. Each one must live his own life. “Every one must bear his own burden.”
“Why should we faint and fear to live alone,
Since all alone (so Heaven has willed) we die?
Not even the tenderest heart, and next our own,
Knows half the reasons why we smile and sigh.”
