We ought to keep our hearts warm and full of kindliness and sweet humanness, even through the harshest experiences. Many of us find life hard and full of pain. We meet misfortunes, sore trials, disappointments. We should not allow these harsh experiences to deaden our sensibilities or make us stoical or sour. Nothing but the love of God shed abroad in us by the Holy Spirit can keep any of us in such gentleness and tenderness amid the stern and severe experiences of life. Yet it is possible to carry the gentle heart of a little child through all life's hardness and chill into the fullest and ripest old age.
